Byakue Kannon -- a male with clearly feminine features -- is shown here clad in a (supposedly white) robe and sitting on a rock at the seashore, or a river bank in Fudaraku, Kannon's wild paradise.
Byakue Kannon, symbolizing the drive for enlightenment, is the source of all the buddhas and bodhisatvas, thus some Indian tantric Buddhists consider him to be Amida's consort. It is also a subject particularly cherished by Zen artists.
