A terracota vessel from Papua New Guinea, used in the Yam ritual. Wosera. Sepik River.Old and with signs of use, in an almost perfect condition, just a few small nicks to the lip.


Size: 28 cm. high.

The scene pictured here is religious -- a Shinto ceremony -- although the object itself is used for decorative purposes: a six-panel table screen depicting a Bugaku performance in some noblemen's garden. Two young girls are seen attired in the butterfly costumes donned for the Kocho Dance, while five musicians play under a canopy to the left.

Pigments and gold on paper, silk. Japan, Edo Period.
