A clip in the shape of a cicada. Probably a western object of little consequence, I am labelling it an amulet as homage to Chinese culture and its centuries-old respect for the cicada. Restored.

Plastic? Size: 65 mm ((2,55") long.

:: manufica amulet from brazil, thumb

ao018

Manu fica amulet, the kind that was attached to a newborn's cradle for protection -- it is clearly too large to be worn as a pendant! (Brazil. XIX-XX centuries).

Wood (tropical), silver. Size: 110,4 cm.(4,34") long.

A fossilized shell amulet, with circle-and-dot incised eye motives expanding from the holed center like starburst rays, symbolizing the Sun-god. In excellent condition, showing patina consistent with an extended burial. Bactria, 2nd. millenium b.C.E.

Made from a slice of Turbinella Pyrum shell. Size aprox. 76 x 25 mm.((3"x 1").
